âMy feet are absolutely killing me. We must have seen over half a dozen houses today,â said Katy. âPoor Bill didnât know what he was letting himself in for when he agreed to come along with me.â
âThank him for me, wonât you?â said Brad, through the computer screen. âYouâll have to send me over the details.â
âI will. The trouble is, properties are being snapped up just as soon as they come on to the market. The agent says if thereâs something we like, then really we need to be putting in an offer there and then if we want any chance of securing it.â
âHonestly, Katy, I trust you to make that decision. If itâs the right size and in the right location and within our budget, then go for it. Itâs only a stop-gap, somewhere to rent for six months or so, until we can find something more permanent.â
That was easy for Brad to say from the other side of the world, soaking up the sunshine. Didnât he realise just how stressful it was trying to find somewhere to live? If he was only here, then the task would be so much simpler. She found the responsibility overwhelming. What if she made the wrong decision and they ended up somewhere that didnât work for Brad or the children?
âHowâs work going?â she asked, masking her irritation. âDo you have a date yet as to when youâll be able to get home?â
Well, it had been a couple of days since sheâd last asked, even though she hated badgering Brad. She was anxious to have her husband back as soon as possible. Initially, when sheâd returned from Australia, Brad had told her heâd be following in a couple of monthsâ time, but that timescale hadnât changed at all in the intervening weeks.
âAfter Christmas, Iâll have a better idea of when I can get away. I know it seems like a long time, but I promise you Iâll be home just as soon as I can.â
It seemed like a lifetime away. She was cross with herself for feeling this way. For being so needy and impatient. Sheâd always wanted to be a wife and mother. It was what sheâd dreamed of, so why couldnât she just take everything in her stride and be happy with her lot?
âCome on,â said Brad, picking up on her low mood from across the miles. âYou and the kids will have a great Christmas from the sound of things. Just concentrate on enjoying yourself and then we can worry about everything else in the new year.â
âI feel bad that youâre out there on your own. I miss you so much.â
âI know that, and I miss you too, but it canât be helped. Besides, weâll still be seeing each other on Christmas Day. I know a Zoom call canât match seeing each other in person, but itâs the next best thing and I canât wait to see the kids open their presents. Honestly, Katy, weâll be back together before you know it, and all this will be forgotten about.
